.
my favorite combo activity right now is podcasts + painting -- I think it feels good to occupy the verbal part of my brain while using the visual part elsewhere, and I like the feeling that the radical reimaginings in the conversations make their way into the art.
.
do you have favorite combos lately, activities that when you pair them feel extra supportive?

It's officially been a year of painting these faces. Thanks for sticking around.
.
(And those of you who sent me photos to paint from, thank you!! I haven't forgotten you! I've made a few attempts but am still interspersing with imaginary faces like this one.)
okay this is Bonnie and we are in love now. we are okay this is Bonnie and we are in love now. we are both going gray and we both just want snacks and to be leaned against and how did I let so many years go by without snuggling horses? (it's my kid who's getting the riding lessons, I'm just in it for the snugs.)
WHAT SEEDS ARE YOU PLANTING? . The thing about spr WHAT SEEDS ARE YOU PLANTING?
.
The thing about spring I was thinking about today is that things only *look* like they're beginning, like they're emerging "out of nowhere."
.
Like these crocuses and tiny daffodils, whose bulbs some neighbor dug into the earth months (or maybe years) ago, there are things welling up in my life and I imagine yours that owe their origins to seeds that got planted long ago.
.
I was thinking about this playdate my daughter and I had recently with some old friends -- and how our friendship dates back to the coincidence that our daughters' kindergarten parent-teacher conferences before school happened to be back to back, and I said something friendly, and she did too, and one thing led to another, and now 5 years later we're still in each other's lives.
.
It's got me thinking about the seeds we plant today may have ripple effects years from now.
.
So dip a toe into that new project. Reach out to that new (or old) friend. Breathe a little wish into the world about something that's just beginning.
.
You don't have to know where it's going or how it will evolve.
.
Here's to spring and what it can help us remember. 🌿
There is this paradox I encounter again and again There is this paradox I encounter again and again with art, with writing: the need to both want it desperately, long for it like a hand that has reached into my chest and wrapped fingers tight around the heart and is tugging me by it, pull, pull, come on, this way -- and simultaneously a need to let go of caring at all. A desperate longing and a letting go and the image that came to me in meditation just now was standing in a stream, ankle deep, in fast current -- how what we long for is that feeling of being fully present in a thing that is sweeping past us, that feeling of watching the beautiful sad impermanence of everything glitter like sun on water and wanting it even as we feel it disappear.
